Road Bikes

Road Bikes

Road bikes are designed for sports racing. They are characterized by their 'drop' or 'roll-over' handlebars.

Plus

Extremely light weight and stylish.
Road bikes are designed for maximum speed, and are the lightest and quickest form of bicycle transport.

Minus

The Charicteristic low crouch over cycle position is not to everyone's taste. Thin wheels are not suitable for inexperienced cyclists.
Road racing bikes are usually very lightweight and if poorly treated, can become easily damaged on urban roads.

Should I buy this type of bike?

Yes if you appreciate fantastic works of engineering.
Yes if you are an experienced cyclist and your primary objective is speed.
No if you intend to use the bike off-road.

Mountain Bikes

The nations most popular type of cycle, Mountain Bikes (MTB) are fantastic for urban use because they are durable enough to withstand the demands of our crumbling roads, and are sporty enough for regular off road use.

Plus

Mountain bikes are extremely practical and generally have plenty of gears. They are designed primarily for off road use and are often supplied with front suspension forks. Some mountain bikes are supplied with front, and or rear disc brakes which are particularly good in wet and muddy conditions.

Minus

These bikes are not as quick on the road as Road racing bikes or Hybrids.

Should I buy this type of bike?

Yes if you need one dual purpose bike e.g. travelling to work every day, and fancy a bit of off road riding at the weekend.
Yes If you only have space in your doorway for one bike.
Yes If you want to do 100% off road cycling.

Hybrid Bikes

Hybrid Bikes

The nations second most popular type of cycle. Hybrids are named so, as they are a cross between Road Racing Bikes, and Mountain Bikes.

Plus

Hybrid bikes are extremely practical, and generally have plenty of gears. These bikes are designed to provide a Mountain Bike's durability and a road bike's speed.
Hybrids come either with 26 inch wheels (mountain bike size) with slick tyres that roll faster on road than knobbly fat Mountain bike tyres, or with 700c wheels, (Road bike size) that are fatter with some tread more stable and durable than thin road bike tires, which usually have an upright riding posture and are fitted with comfortable saddle, and are supplied with mudguards and racks fitted suitable for long distance travelling.
Hybrids are sensible multi purpose machines, strong enough to withstand light off road action while fast on the road.

Minus

These bikes are not quite as quick as road bikes, and are not as durable as mountain bikes.

Should I buy this type of bike?

Yes if you need one dual purpose bike e.g. travelling to work every day, and fancy a bit of occasional light cross county / touring recreational riding.
Yes If you only have space in your doorway for one bike.

Ladies Bikes

Ladies bikes have step through frames, which allow cycling in skirts, and allow ladies to mount and dismount gracefully.

Plus

Very easy to mount and dismount, and allows you to ride a bike while wearing a skirt without revealing the colour of your knickers. You can buy ladies versions of a select number of bikes.

Minus

Guys don't generally want to ride this kind of bike for fear of being labelled a big girls blouse, (Could be a good point girls, as your partner is less likely to buy you a bike to use himself!)

Should I buy a this type of bike?

Yes if you often wear a skirt whilst cycling, or are a traditionalist, or value the low step over height.
Yes if you have a back or hip problem and have difficulty raising your leg over the cross bar.
Yes if you are not confident about mounting and dismounting.
Yes if you want to lower the chances of your bike being stolen.
